How do I obtain an API key?

omdbapi.com, the API used in this plugin, offers a free version of its API keys. However, please keep in mind that the free version is limited to 1,000 API calls per day. This should only affect bigger movie websites or databases.

To get the free API key, hit the "Get your free personal API key" button on Movie Details' main admin page or just click here. Once you have received the key via email, copy and paste it into the API key field on the plugin's admin page. Save the changes by hitting the "Save API key" button and you are good to go.

Where can I get the movie title?

_Movie Details _is only able to find your movie when you enter the original title. These can be found on IMDb.com. However, in some countries, the title is being translated or simply changed which can be cause if _Movie Details _does not find the movie you have selected its movie title.

An example: A movie released in 2008 starring Liam Neeson carries the official title "Taken". However, in Germany, the same movie is being called "96 Hours".

But it becomes even more confusing: When a person in Germany visits the page of the said movie on IMDb.com, he will, too, see the non-original title.

In these cases, the original title will be displayed below the translated one. This is the movie title you need.

What is the IMDb ID and where can I get it?

The safest way to tell Movie Details what movie you would like to get information of, use the IMDb ID. You can find it when visiting your selected movie on IMDb.com and taking a look at the URL in your web browser. The last part of the URL, usually starting with "tt", is considered to be the IMDb ID.

Here are some example IDs:

  • tt0936501 ("Taken")
  • tt0429493 ("The A-Team")
  • tt1401152 ("Unknown")
  • tt2334879 ("White House Down")
